Get 3/4 cup coconut milk -
Prepare Curry leaves
Take Salt
Make ready Oil
Prepare chicken To marinate
Get 1 1/4 tspns Red chilli powder -
Prepare 1 tspn Coriander powder -
Get 1/4 tspn Turmeric powder -
Make ready 1 tspn Ginger garlic paste -
Prepare Salt
Get To temper the curry
Get Oil
Prepare 1/4 tspn Mustard seeds -
Prepare 2 or 3 red chilli Dry -
Make ready 1 sprig Curry leaves -
Prepare rice / To make dumplingspidi
Make ready 1 1/4 cups Rice Flour -
Get 1/4 cup coconut Grated -
Make ready 1/2 tspn Fennel seeds - crushed finely
Make ready Salt
Prepare 1 1/4 cups water Boiling -
Tip the whole mixture in to a large bowl, add salt and mix well. Add the rice powder and mix well using hands until you get a dough that. When its done, drop dumplings (tiny rice balls)one by one into the coconut milk and stir. Savoury version of Pidi (Rice dumplings) was something new to me.
Steps to make Kozhi Pidi/Rice Dumplings in Chicken Gravy:
Marinate the chicken pieces with ingredients listed under for marination and keep for 1 hr.
Heat oil in a pan.Add sliced onion and saute till they become light brown.Now add crushed ginger garlic,green chilli and curry leaves.Saute till the raw smell goes.Now add in red chilli powder,corinader powder,turmeric powder and garam masala powder.Saute for few seconds.Then add marinated chicken pieces.Sprinkle enough salt.Mix well.Cover and cook in medium heat for 5 mints.
Meanwhile we can make rice dumplings/pidi.Take rice flour,grated coconut crushed fennel and salt in a bowl.Add in boilng water little by little and mix the flour using a spoon/spatula.Keep on adding water little by little untill the rice flour attains the desired consistency.The dough should be soft but not sticky.(usually the amount of water we need is equal to the amount of rice flour thet we use.)Now when the dough is still warm,knead it to amooth dough using your hand.Now make…
Now see if the chicken needs some water for the gravy.If so add 1/4 cup of water to it.Cook for another 2-3 mints.Then add the rice dumplings on top of the chicken curry.Cover and cook again.At this stage don't mix the gravy with spoon(the rice dumplings will break).Cover and cook in medium flame till the gravy thickens and the rice dumplings are also cooked.Now add thick coconut milk and sprinkle fennel powder.Mix very gently.Cover and let it sit for few seconds.Remove from fire.
Now heat little oil in another pan.Splutter mustard seeds.Add in dry red chilli and curry leaves.Pour this into the gravy.Keep it covered for 5 mints.Serve hot.

We make a sweet version of it called as Unda Payasam as evening snack. The very first time I had savoury/spicy pidi was in Bombay, at one of our family friend's house. But there the pidi was served on the side with chicken curry.
